During these difficult and uncertain times, many members of OUSC are trying to do their bit to help the NHS and their local communities. We wanted to share some of their stories to spread some positivity and inspire you to do what you can to help out.
Rinda Naresh
Medicine, 1st Year, New College, Women’s Seconds Captain
Rinda is currently volunteering at her local hospital to support the NHS with the distribution of PPE. As part of her role, Rinda must deliver PPE to the wards to save hundreds of doctors from having to drive long distances to collect this equipment each day. This means that doctors and nurses can prioritise patient care whilst staying safe and protected.
Another part of the role involves helping elderly coronavirus patients make contact with their families via video call. Many of these patients do not have smart phones and have not been able to see their friends or families for weeks now.
Zoe Faure Bealieu
Chemistry, 2nd Year, Pembroke, Women’s Blues Captain
Zoe is currently working as a Check in and Chat Volunteer as part of the Royal Voluntary Service. In this role, Zoe provides telephone support for vulnerable people who are having to self isolate.
Jamie Towner
Medicine, 5th Year, Worcester, 2017-18 Men’s Blues Captain
Jamie is currently working hard as part of the Oxford Vaccine Group which is set to start the UK’s first coronavirus vaccine clinical trial next week.
You can read more about the work the group is doing here:
Sarah is volunteering at her local hospital to help support the NHS with admin and non-clinical roles. Part of her role involves sitting with Dementia patients during meal times to provide them with some company and support.
Lara Reed
Medicine, 4th Year, Somerville, Open Water Captain
Lara is currently looking after children whose parents are working for the NHS. She is also helping to home school them to ensure that they continue to progress whilst the schools are closed.
Luiza Farache Trajano
Medicine, 3rd Year, Magdalen
Luiza is about to start as a volunteer for a clinical trial exploring how two drugs that are currently on the market could be used as potential therapies for Covid-19 infected patients.
Medic from St Hugh’s College
A member of the Seconds Team is currently volunteering in the ICU at a local hospital. This role involves working on the front line during 12 hour shifts to support NHS staff.
There are many ways that you can get involved and lend a helping hand. Food banks have seen a 300% increase in demand during the coronavirus pandemic. We would recommend donating to a local food bank, if possible, and you can find your nearest food bank here: https://www.trusselltrust.org/get-involved/ways-to-give/donate-food/
Remember that there is always someone that you can talk to should you need to. Contact our Welfare Officer Owen Lawton, or you can contact the OUSC President: Christy Sadler. Their emails found on the committee page. We have lots of other contacts on the Welfare page of the website so please do have a look.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, Rosenblatt Pool and the rest of Iffley Road Leisure Centre has been closed for the coming weeks and therefore all sessions have been cancelled until further notice. We hope everyone is safe and we wish everyone the best for …
This year the Seconds Varsity Swimming match took place at the Rosenblatt Pool, Oxford. It was a very close and exciting match all the way with Oxford sneaking victory with 95-81. This marks the second time the Dolphins have beaten the Marlins with a much …
This year, Varsity was held at Rosenblatt Pool, Iffley Road, Oxford on the 29th February making it the first ever leap year Varsity (maybe). In an incredibly exciting match, Oxford and Cambridge were neck and neck throughout, separable by only 6 points at the end of the individual races. Oxford then dominated the relays, winning 3 out of the 4 and beating Cambridge by 14 points overall.
This year saw an amazing 4 club records broken. Congratulations to Tobermoray Mackay-Champion for his record in the 100 Breast, Sophie Lawrence for her record in the 400 Free and James Towner for his record in the 100m Free, as well as the record-breaking Women’s 4x50m Medley relay. Theo Cannon was awarded swimmer of the match for his record breaking 100 Free, 200 IM and leg of the free relay.

The Thames waters were a tropical 19.2 degrees for Oxford’s 5:40am swim in the Selkie Henley Classic 2019. A team of 7 Oxford swimmers – 3 boys and 4 girls – embraced the cold, early start and were ready to race the 2.1km course. Newly …
As Zoe Faure Beaulieu rounds off her first year at OUSC by being shortlisted for Oxford Sports Federation’s ‘Fresher of the Year’ award for her great attitude to swimming and 4 new club records, we ask her about her experience of adapting to swimming at …
A team of 11 traveled to Ponds Forge, Sheffield for the annual BUCS Teams Championships in March.
Day 1 saw a series of record-breaking swims from OUSC, securing the team a place in the National Championship final where they rounded off a highly successful season with a 7th place finish.
Evidently, celebrations for the Varsity success of just 3 weeks prior did not interfere with training, as James Towner broke an impressive three club records in one day, swimming a 57.42 in the 100m Individual Medley followed by an outstanding 25.53 in the 50m Backstroke. The final record that day was achieved alongside his teammates Daniel Luo, Matthew Williams and outgoing Captain, Declan Pang, in the 4x50m Freestyle relay, where the boys touched in 3rd place in a time of 01.32.17 and went on to secure 5th place in the final the next day.
Day 2 saw another new club record from Zoe Faure Beaulieu in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 33.19 as she finished 3rd, gaining 8 points for the team.
The team’s comfortable 7th place overall reaffirmed OUSC’s consistent status as one of the fastest university swimming teams in the UK, and Cambridge’s 9th place reinforced Oxford’s Varsity win this year.
Well done to all the swimmers involved – we wish those of you with exams the best of luck this summer and look forward to the start of the open water season!
